I have an ipod that belonged to my grandson, but he does not remember the Apple id he used to set this device and now I want to reset it so that I can put my information on it.

If this is a 5th, 6th or 7th generation iPod touch, you will not be able to restore it without the original ID and password. See: Activation Lock for iPhone and iPad - Apple Support

Then if you want to change the User ID see: Change your Apple ID - Apple Support

Is this an iPod touch? If so, that’s Activation Lock you are encountering, it’s intended as a theft deterrent, and is intentionally difficult to bypass. Factory reset will not clear that. You’ll need to regain access to that Apple ID (as described above), or will need the original purchase receipt and a discussion directly with Apple.
