The iPhone does not connect to the Mac by pairing the two as you might with other Bluetooth devices like headphones and speakers. To use the two devices together you simply make sure you have signed in to the same Apple ID account on both devices and enable both Bluetooth and wi-fi on both devices.

For the basic iCloud synchronization, you would sign in to the same Apple ID account on both devices, and turn on the iCloud synchronization features you're interested in (e.g., Photos, Contacts, Calendars) on both.

If you have e-mail accounts that you access through IMAP (where the master copy of e-mail remains on the e-mail server), your Mac and iPhone can access the same e-mail accounts (and associated calendars) in that way, even if you aren't using iCloud.

There are all sorts of other features that the Continuity document goes into. For instance, you can

  • Set up your iPhone to allow your Mac to send and receive SMS/MMS messages (a cell phone thing)
  • Take and place cell phone calls on your Mac (again, with the aid of the iPhone)
  • Use your iPhone as a Webcam for your Mac
  • Set up your Mac as an AirPlay receiver, and stream photos or video from your iPhone to your Mac's screen as if your Mac was a HDTV. (Though if you have iCloud Photos set up on both your iPhone and your Mac, you might just want to pull up photos from the Photos application on the Mac.)
