I never really noticed it but my iPhone 13 Pro does not have a SIM card in the card slot. Do I need one?

No, you can use it with just an eSIM (which you apparently must be). Also see: About eSIM on iPhone - Apple Support
If it has a cellular connection then it must have eSIM,
Settings, Cellular (or Mobile Service)
If you see Delete eSIM then it has one. (Don't delete it!)
I agree. I just changed to a provider that could give me an eSIM and I threw away my SIM card.
Thank you for the SIM information. I did look up more info on Apple Support for eSIM. Would I gain anything such as more security if I went a physical card or would it just mess up my current settings? If I were to get a card would I get one thru my cellular supplier?
There is no reason that I know of to switch to a physical SIM.
No SIM card in my iPhone 13 Pro.
