Disk Warrior question

"A directory optimization index could not be calculated for this disk because of a disk malfunction"

The above was displayed when checking an internal startup drive. I check every so often and then start from an external if the internal needs rebuilding.

After see the message I ran DW from an external, successful rebuild!

However once restarting the Mac and opening DW I had the same 'malfunction' message. I have found no operating problems. Smart Utility says drive 'passed'.

Background:

2015 MBP w/ Monterey was reformatted HFS+ via DU from an external (CCC cloned) High Sierra backup then the external contents cloned to the MBP.

My thoughts on the DW message:

1) a permissions issue

2) firmware/rom issue as I did not 'install' High Sierra but rather cloned a working copy

Your comments appreciated (note: DW support has failed to answer my query)

MacOS Monterey should be on an APFS formatted startup drive and any Time Machine backup should be on an APFS formatted drive as well. You will have brought over considerable incompatible content from High Sierra using CCC cloning to the internal drive and that along with Monterey may be giving Disk Warrior gas.

With APFS formatting on Monterey, there would be nothing for DiskWarrior to fix and by example, I no longer use it.

You can only repair an HFS+ (aka MacOS Extended) volume, but only while booted from an external boot drive. You cannot repair the drive you are booted. They provide instructions for creating a bootable macOS external drive to use with Disk Warrior....they may even have instructions for running Disk Warrior from a macOS installer.

As @VikingOSX mentions, Disk Warrior does not currently have the ability to repair an APFS volume which is utilized by macOS 10.13+ boot volumes. Alsoft, the developer of Disk Warrior is currently working on adding support to repair APFS volumes, but that will take some time before it is ready.

Thanks for the comments.

The backup via CCC was done when the MBP was running High Sierra.

Before cloning the backup to the MBP internal runing Monterey theMBP internal was erased and partitioned HFS+ with DU (from High Sierra)as the backup has HFS+.

I never used Monterey. Apple Genius Bar installed it during a repair.

I remember reading that one needs to install High Sierra or later before adding a PCIE SSD.

Hence such must change/update firmware/roms that Sierra or earlier does not do.

So I wondered if Monterey might have done it’s own newer updating to the machine and that I need to do a High Sierra installation rather than just the simple clone I did.

No, I can't assume that, since even though I'm running in Mojave 10.14.6, all Upgrades have been instaled upto & including Sonoma 14.3, which I think is where the Boot ROMs & SMC versions get written to firmware, mostly in the Security Updates alongthe way, I I don't believe they ever Downgrade the Frmware versions.
