GPS for iPhone

iPhone GPS - does the iPhone have a GPS that can display altitude? X, Y is ok for terrain location, but without Z (altitude) I have to go with an external GPS. The iPad's GPS reports X, Y, Z data. The iPhone's workaround seems to be a barometric kluge used with the compass app. Can't be accurate.

Get the free app GPSdiagnostic from the App Store. Comparing it to the Compass app in my iPhone they agree when outdoors. Apparently the compass switches to barometric altitude when it cannot receive >=4 satellites. Note that GPS requires a minimum of 4 satellites simultaneously visible, and only works outdoors with a clear view of the sky.
