WD My Passport for Mac not showing up anywhere

My Passport for Mac external drive is not showing up on my computer. It is not showing in Finder nor is it showing in Disk Utility. I have a 2020 Macbook Pro and my macOS was Monterey. My passport is roughly 6 years old. Unfortunately the sticker on the back with the serial number has almost completely rubbed off. I have connected my Passport to my laptop multiple times before and had no issue. It has been a few months, but I have not updated my computer or changed any settings since. I had backed up my harddrive to Time Machine, which is not showing any location.

So far I have:

  • relaunched Finder
  • restarted my computer
  • reset USB ports
  • confirmed that "external disks" are visible on Finder sidebar, and "all devices" is selected in Disk Utility
  • looked at "USB" in System Information app, which also does not show it
  • downloaded the WD Discovery app (which I didn't even know existed, i.e. the disk previously worked fine without it) which I have since uninstalled
  • confirmed there is no physical damage to the drive (the light is on and I can hear it running, there are no clicking noises or anything else odd)
  • confirmed the cables are working (a micro USB to USB cable for the drive, and a USB to USB C adapter for the laptop)
  • left it plugged in for 45 minutes and waited, in case it just took a while to show up.
  • updated my computer so it is now Sonoma 14.3.1, and it's still not showing up.

Before it is suggested please note I am unable to manually mount the disk, or run First Aid on it, as it is not even showing up in Disk Utility.

Is there anything else I can do?? At the very least, is there any way to recover the files somehow?

Should I try plugging it into a different computer?

Thank you so much to anyone that can help. Luckily it won't be the end of the world if the files are lost forever.

I would first check the health of the WD drive by running DriveDx (free trial period) and posting the complete text report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper. You will need to install a special USB driver in order to attempt to access the health information on the external drive.

If the WD drive is healthy, then try running Disk Utility First Aid on the physical drive/device, and also on the volume or hidden Container depending on the file system being utilized. Even if First Aid says everything is "Ok", click "Show Details" and scroll through the report to see if any unfixed errors are listed.....if so, run First Aid again to see if they are repaired.

What file system is being used on the WD drive?

Unfortunately upgrading to Sonoma may have made this job even harder since a lot of people have encountered issues with some external drives under Sonoma.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode to see if you can access the external drive? If you are using third party NTFS drivers or the WD proprietary software, then you won't be able to use Safe Mode for accessing the WD drive.
