I am now using the native Mail app in Mac (Sonoma 14.3.1) after having used Spark and Airmail for some time. However I came across this support thread and saw the answer that there is no way to change the default behaviour of how the mail app attaches files - it just simply embeds the files into the message - I cant really believe that this in fact true as I've never come across another mail app that would do this kind of behaviour .... However I am indeed still trying to find a solution as every time I send a message with an attachment the damm thing embeds the file / image / whatever into the message ! This is an absolute deal breaker for a such an important application - there surely has to be a way to simply have the file / image as a separate attachment for the receiver to download.......... ? Surely ........?

Send attachments to Windows users in Mail on Mac

Try these suggestions for sending email attachments to Windows users.

  • To send Windows-friendly attachments for all messages, choose Edit > Attachments, then select Always Send Windows-Friendly Attachments.

  • To send Windows-friendly attachments for a single message, click the Attachment button  in the toolbar of the new message window, then select Send Windows-Friendly Attachments (if the checkbox isn’t shown, click Options).
  • Send documents as PDFs instead of in their original format.

The Mail app may handle attachments differently than other mail clients, but it can be managed.

Single-page attachments default to the "View in place" status. You can change that to "View as Icon" by right-clicking the attachment and selecting "View as Icon" from the pop-up menu.

Multi-page attachments default to the "View as Icon" status. If you wish, that can also be changed by using the same method.

I do not know how to change the default behavior for this, but to me it's a minor inconvenience.

FWIW, "View as Icon" only changes what you see when composing an email. Not what the recipient sees.
