Past attribute not working on Titles in Final Cut Pro

I have created many titles on the timeline by importing them from XML file.

I want to format them as I like (cause subtitles cannot be properly formatted, I had to tranform them into basic titles).

I have formatted a title clip as I like and now I was trying to use "Paste attribute" to copy the formatting to all the titles, but nothing happens.

I want to copy position and size of the text only, I select this parameters in the "Paste Attribute" window but this is not working. I know someone else in the past had the same issue, but the topic was closed without a solution.

Any suggestions on how to solve this?

What I called "a)" looks like this:

Notice that no Transform tool is active, you just click and drag the text.

This changes the position of the text relative to its container, but NOT the position of the title - no change in X or Y in the video inspector, either.

Option "b)" is to actually use the Transform tool, and it may look like this:

Dragging this way DOES change the whole title, and DOES affect the X and Y values.

If you do it this way,and then Copy; and subsequently do Paste Attributes to another title (or clip or generator), like this:

then the transform values carry over:

Luis!! Thank you so much! I now see that there are two "positions" even in the Inspector.

I was changing the Position on the "Text Inspector" Tab (which as you explained is the position within the container), while I had to change the Position on the "Video Inspector" Tab (on the transform section).

As you said, this position is copied and can be pasted as an attribute to all other texts in one go.

I'm not sure it is logical that the container-position is not copied as well, but no matter what, you solved my problem, I knew that in some way the "Paste Attribute" was the way to go! Huge thank you!!

Look, you didn't realize that, right? This is basic functionality. Luis and I knew from the beginning that you didn't know much about how to set titles and position clips.

“I’m actually quite familiar with FCP” and don’t overestimate your own abilities. Because it misses important things and prevents you from expanding your knowledge.

As you said, this position is copied and can be pasted as an attribute to all other texts in one go.

Luis's and my proposals may seem different, but the result is the same. The only difference is whether you set it later or first.

I'm not sure it is logical that the container-position is not copied as well

Please give feedback to Apple.

Thank you for your answer LocaAlicia, but maybe I have not explained well what I mean.

I have already imported all the texts so I have hundreds of titles as “connected clips” which function as subtitles (for some reason the standard srt subtitles on FCP cannot be formatted as I want, which I find very odd). What should be easy and possible is to format one title (font, size, position) and copy the formatting to all the other titles that are already there.

I think this workflow should do the job but it’s not…

  1. Formatting size and position of a title.
  2. Copy the “title clip”
  3. Selecting all the other titles texts
  4. Going to Edit/Paste attributes
  5. Selecting Parameters to be pasted from source title, i.e. position
  6. Click on Paste.

Nothing happens.

I’ve also tried another procedure by saving the title text as a “template” creating a new text style to then apply to all text, but position is not saved into the template, so its not copied.

I find all this very annoying, and unless I’m doing something wrong it’s definitely a big bug to be fixed from Apple.

I had already imagined that a lot of title clips would be inserted into the timeline by loading the XML. The reason why it doesn't work is probably because you are not yet familiar with FCP editing.

As Luis said, titles and clips have different types of information. You are trying to treat two different clips the same way. It is wrong to think that you can do this with shift+⌘V (paste attribute), even though you need to understand the characteristics and treat them separately.

For the above reasons, I needed to create an adjusted title and then suggest character substitutions.
