to get us started, which Mac (model and year) do you have? and which external DVD player are you using?
if it is the apple SuperDrive, is it connected DIRECTLY to the Mac? it will not work if connected through a dock or hub. and if your Mac has only USB-C ports, you will need an USB-C to USB Adapter to connect it directly to the Mac.
