Old and new external keyboard acting up.

I am having problems with an external “Zagg Pro” keyboard, the second one, randomly not typing random letters or not typiing random letters at all. I have tried hard restarts, forgetting the device and repairing with it time again. It started gradually so I thought it was me but then it got really bad. So I bought a new keyboard. Ninety dollars down the tube if it wasn’t the keyboard

iPad Air, iPadOS 17

It is totally random. I have tried the accessibility setting and that really did not change anything. One minute everything will be working fine and the next totally different buttons will act up. It is really confounding and the only thing I can think of that might act this way is a virus.

Providing that your iPad has been kept up-to-date with system software updates, you should not be overly concerned for your iPad being directly compromised by malware. Due to the system architecture of iOS/iPadOS, unless jailbroken, your iPad is not susceptible to traditional malware infection. As such, in context of your Zagg keyboard issues, you can dismiss any thoughts that malware may be a causal factor.

Given that you indicate experiencing the same problem with two identical keyboards, either you a successfully triggering a firmware fault consistent across the keyboards - or your iPad has an issue.

Starting at the beginning, recognising that you may have tried this already, try a forced-restart of your iPad - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings - after which you will need to restore your data from your backup:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly Zagg Support - and/or from Apple Support.

You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:
