Can I buy an iPhone without the current carriers?

I currently have an iPhone 7 Plus and want to upgrade to the current model; however, I do not want to purchase an iPhone through any of the current carriers. Can I purchase an unlocked iPhone from an Apple store and then activate at my current carrier which is AT&T?
