I always use the Wait feature in Digital Performer, but Logic does not have it. Not sure how this issue relates to a tape machine, other than, yes, it's day and night easier.
I need to punch in, or replace sections of a performance often. When I'm recording a virtual piano, there are times when I want to replace or redo and section. In DP, I can park the playhead where it starts, press Wait, then Record, and recording will begin when it senses a midi note or controller event. Very handy. There's no real way to do that in logic other than record that section on another take, copy it and past to the location. But that method would not allow me to hear the feel of the prior section's performance to match it in the new section.
Anyway...I hope turning off input monitoring helps this problem, but doesn't that relate only to audio tracks? Most of my recording is midi, and on this project I don't even have any audio tracks on it yet.
