iTunes refuses to recognize the iPod

ipod is recognized in the preview pane of windows explorer and I can open and view the contents but iTunes refuses to recognize the ipod

Try this Apple article: If your computer doesn’t recognise your iPhone or iPad – Apple Support (UK).
