I am unable to add a card to my Apple Wallet

I’m having the same issues as everyone else with not being able to add my card to my apple wallet . I believe the issue is with Apple and this is why; I was successfully able to add the same cards to my friend’s Apple wallet with no problem.


I reached out to my card issuer (RBFCU) and they too were unsuccessful with adding the card to my Apple wallet. I was told by the card issuer they received a message stating my Apple account has a FRAUD alert from a previous debit card that was attached to my apple wallet. which is preventing them from adding my card to the wallet on there end.


I reached back out to Apple support and was told I don’t have any alerts on my Apple account. And the message the card issuer provided to me was untrue.

I have performed every trouble shooting theory the support community has provided and still no success. I have reached out to Apple support 10 or more times and still no success. I have even went to the Apple Store and still no success.


Per my case rep he has escalated my case to the development team for further investigation.


Can someone tell me if a Fraud alert on the Apple account is really a thing and how do I get this resolved?

Update: Per my case rep.


When a card is added to the wallet for use with Apple Pay, user and device specific information is sent to the card issuer during the card add request. Adding a card to another device passes along a unique device identifier, Apple ID details, etc. during the request. When successful, a new Device Account Number is created for that specific device by the card issuer. When removed from the device, the Device Account Number token is typically removed from Visa’s system. If this does not get removed, Visa’s system may still show an active Device Account Number for your specific device and reject requests for a new Device Account Number from the same device.


This can also be seen with cards that can successfully be added to an iPad and Apple Watch owned by the same Apple ID user but may have the request rejected when trying to add to the same user’s iPhone if the financial network thinks that there is still an active Device Account Number for that device.


Card issuers have the ability to contact Visa/Mastercard/Discover/American Express to remove previous provisioning that Apple cannot alter.

in my time working with apple devices including apple wallet, I have never heard of this in my time.


have you tried it on another Apple ID, on the same device?

if not, please try that... and, if you have another apple device with the same Apple ID on it, try on that device.

Thanks for your prompt response. Please see my comments in Bold.


•Have you tried it on another Apple ID, on the same device? I just set up a new Apple ID on the same device and it did not work.


I do not have another Apple device to perform the other test.


If this is a device issue, how do you resolve issue? I have reset the network already.

I feel like this is a security issue or a security response with your bank. Apple simply hosts your card information providing you with the privilege to use your card virtually, whilst the bank typically runs it through many checks before it is released to Apple Pay. something with the bank is triggering an issue and stopping it from continuing. ask to speak with card security at your bank to get this problem looked into, as it may not be seen by specific departments in your bank, card security is your way to go!

Doesn’t surprise me Visa tier 1 support has no clue. This isn’t the type of issue they normally deal with. In my experience the contact has to be initiated by the bank.


Actions on your end would be trying to reach a support team member at the bank. If the bank contacts the provider network it gets resolved quickly.


Another possibility is a limit on the number of tokens (some inactive) associated with the device. Again, it’s usually the provider network that needs to manually remove the tokens for the device. I’m guessing but some banks may be able to remove tokens and it appears the tokens will expire after a period of time.

This is helpful information, but so far the bank has been unable to help with resolving this "Card Not Added" issue. The bank says they also get errors on their end when trying to do anything with my digital wallet. When I mention payment network operator they say they have no way of communicating with them. I may try a few more times, but as with everyone else, I'm currently stuck in jumping back and forth between the banks' customer support and Apple support. Apple has opened a case for me as well to investigate, it will be interesting if they return the same response.

Ok so some updates:


Apple came back and confirmed two things: 1) Not being able to add my Apple Account balance to my wallet is a bug they are aware of and will likely fix in a software update 2) Not being able to add credit cards is being caused by rejections from the Network (VISA/MASTERCARD/ etc).


In the meanwhile, last night I was able to randomly add all my credit cards and apple account balance to my Apple WATCH successfully without having to call anyone. I was happy with this because I could use Apple Pay like normal finally.


Trying to add credit cards to my iPhone wallet continued to return "cannot add card". I tried one of the tricks mentioned on this forum yet again - disable my passcode, then enable it again - and that allowed me to add some of my cards to my iPhone wallet via the "Previous Cards" section of the wallet. However, I was still required to call the bank to complete verification, something they were actually able to do!


So overall I am unable to identify a specific solution. It may be a combination of time, resetting things on your phone/watch, and calling your bank. I am now in an acceptable state of being able to use Apple Pay for the most part. If the issue ever completely resolves, I will update.
