Screen goes dim within a few seconds of opening the lid

MacBook Pro running Sonoma 14.1.2 I open the lid, screen looks fine, then goes dim after a few seconds. If I close and open the lid a second time right away, it goes dim immediately. If I wait a couple of hours before opening it again, I get a few extra seconds. This came on suddenly two days ago. No software added, but maybe there was an update of something?

what does that mean dim....

can you see the screen at all, is it functional?

Can you turn up the screen brightness?

What exact Mac?

What exact macOS?

Old issue , new issue, what changed?

what I can say—

The current stable release of Sonoma including bug fixes, security updates is macOS 14.3.1 - I would start there.

you can see from Terminal.app if there was an update if you are in doubt... copy and paste:

softwareupdate --history
