iPhone photo import (File Explorer) to Windows 11 - Two versions of EVERY picture (no edits) AND AAE files - how can I stop this from happening

So annoying that things that used to work suddenly become so utterly painful and counter-intuitive. I just want to plug in my iphone, click import, and have my photos on my PC.

However, I get two version (with different file names) of every photo, one slightly smaller - or cropped - from the other. Plus an AAE file for every photo despite no edits and no live photos.

Can anyone help please?

Thank you, léonie.

I had not actively changed any settings, but it did appear that the aspect ratio was at 16:9. There are a lot of additional settings for camera now. When I changed back to 4:3 I still had the same issue, and my settings under Camera > Preserve settings did not seem to work/come into effect until I powered-down and restarted myiPhone. Seems to work now. Thanks again.

Had you set the Camera on the iPhone to a different aspect ratio, for example 16:9 ? Then you will get two versions of the photo, the original 4.3 picture and the version cropped to 16:9, as the sensor is 4:3, and the 16:9 file is a cropped version The additional .AAR file may be created, if you have set the Camera to use a photographic style or a filter.
