Remove the VPN app entirely, and remove McAfee entirely, and remove any other similar apps, restart, and try again.

I would not expect a restart (alone) to fix what these sorts of apps too often cause.

Any add-on security apps or add-in VPN apps installed? Is so, remove those, restart, and test again.

VPNs are too often privacy messes, badly solving a problem which hasn’t existed for a decade or so, but solving it in a way perfect to collect personally-identified metadata.

No-logging VPNs have also been caught logging, when the “non-existent” logs were found exposed on the ‘net.

Add-on security apps can’t scan storage or apps, but can access traffic, which means those too can access and quite possibly collect your metadata.

And too many of the add-ons have been caught collecting and reselling metadata.

Apple iCloud+ Private Relay works well for privacy, while the existing end-to-end TLS works well for security. And the built-in anti-malware can scan storage, and can remove problematic apps.
