Update 17.4 Issue with External Monitor

Update to IOS 17.4 this morning and now my external monitor only works in mirror mode. The iPad recognizes the external monitor but the toggle switch for the mirror mode does not work. Remains in mirror mode. Thoughts?

Having tested a fifth generation iPad Pro 12.9" updated to iPadOS 17.4, I can confirm that Stage Manager/Screen Mirroring with a connected external display is not operating as expected.

While the iPad screen will successfully mirror its screen to the external HDMI display, full screen (Stage Manager) is not enabled as expected when disabling Mirroring from the screen Arrangement settings.

I have verified this behaviour with both an Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter - and a Kingston Nucleum USB-C hub - both connected via HDMI to a compatible external monitor.

Repeating this test with an identical model iPad Pro, instead running iPadOS 17.3.1, the external HDMI display operates is full screen with Stage Manager as expected. Mirroring can be enabled/disabled with anticipated behaviour.

If you have not already done so, you would be best advised to submit a Bug Report via Apple's Product Feedback portal.

Feedback - iPad - Apple

When submitting a Bug Report, ensure that you include details of your iPad model and installed version of iPadOS within the body-text of your report. Don't rely upon the pick-list - as this rarely includes the current versions. Having verified the bug, I too have submitted a supporting Bug Report to Apple.

Every report counts - as until sufficient reports are submitted, Apple may not assign resources to investigate and resolve the issue. When submitting a report, you would be well advised to be both constructive and non confrontational; those reading/analysing your report are human and will do their best to escalate the problem to the appropriate team(s) for action.

Interesting. I have myself tried toggling on/off dozens of times - without being able to resolve the mirroring problem.

Please clarify precisely how your iPad is connected to the external monitor. Are you using an Apple USB-C Digital AV Adapter to connect with an HDMI cable - or using a USB-C hub, or other Adapter? Perhaps you are connecting to the monitor directly with a USB-C to USB-C cable?

I want to thank everyone that replied to my external monitor issue! Not sure what happened, but the problem mysteriously went away! Go figure. Didn’t do anything different than before but the external monitor and mirror switch started to work properly again! Logic tells me I’m the culprit, but I’m fine with that as long as it’s working again! Thanks for all your input.

Found a work around. I’m having the same issue with my iPad Air 5. Spent 2 hours on phone with tier 2 Apple support trying to help my brother with same issue. Got it to work, but reverted next day. I stumbled onto a work around. Posted bug report yesterday at apple.com/feedback. Everyone please do the same.

Work Around: Instead of trying to put external monitor in Stage Manager mode the normal way, go to Settings and scroll to the top to get your Search field. Type in Stage Manager, click on “Stage Manager” in the results. Click on External Display. Stage Manager will be preselected. Select Screen Mirroring, then select Stage Manager again. The external display will properly go into Stage Manager as expected.

You’ll have to do this every time you want to active Stage Manager on your external display but, it’s quick and easy once you learn it.

Hint: Make sure to cancel your search in Settings so that the next time you need to do it, it’s a fresh search. If you don’t, it may not work properly.

This has been working for me for 4 days now.

FYI, iPadOS 17.4.1 (released 21/3/2024) restores previous behaviour.

Unless directly interacting with Apps displayed on the external monitor, Stage Manager for a connected external display does not now require connection of a Keyboard and Wireless/Mouse Trackpad to the iPad.

Having the same issue here. I connect my Keyboard and mouse to the USB A ports on my monitor and a USB C cable from my monitor to my macbook pro (video out + power). Works a treat! However with my iPad, StageManager is disabled when I connect it the USB C cable from my external monitor. I’m forced to get into the settings every time and disable mirror mode. Super freaking annoying.

After reading the comments here.. I connected my mouse to a USB Hub with the monitor via HDMI. When connecting the hub to my iPad everything works perfectly. After disconnecting/reconnecting the iPad to the USB C port out the hub, DisplayManager is retained and does not go into Mirror mode anymore.

Super annoying that DisplayManager doesnt work without it detecting a mouse first. Raised a bug report to Apple. Fingers crossed it gets fixed soon
