The current version of the Instagram app requires iOS 15.0 or later.


If your iPhone is old enough that it cannot run iOS 15.0 or later, that would be why you can't "update" to the current Instagram app. For instance, if your phone is an iPhone 6 or 6 Pus (no "s"), it can only update to the latest release of iOS 12 – which isn't recent enough to let you use the current Instagram app. You will have to get a newer phone, or do without that app.


If your iPhone is capable of running iOS 15.0 or later, but is still on an earlier version, you need to update iOS before downloading the Instagram app. For instance, the iPhone 7 originally shipped with iOS 10.0, but it is able to run the latest release of iOS 15. If you have one of those and it's still on iOS 10.0, it's long overdue for an update.
