Time Machine error when backing up files

I have a brand new 8TB external Hard Drive (Western Digital) set up as Time Machine. It barely copied 12 GB of my 490 when it quit, returning the error: "Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “Time_Machine” An error occurred while copying files." I had this error happening before, that's why I bought a new disk for making TM backups. (27 iMac 2017, Big Sur)

Thanks for your reply. I managed to back up 720 GB of 3,555 GB, but then it stopped. Running First Aid on the Time Machine, which is listed as WD My Book 25EE Media, I am getting no error on the disk but the following error on the Container disk (which is listed underneath and within the hierarchy):


Running First Aid on “Container disk6”:


Repairing storage system

Performing fsck_apfs -y -x /dev/disk4s2

error: container /dev/rdisk6 is mounted.

Storage system check exit code is 65.

Storage system verify or repair failed. : (-69716)


Operation failed…


Then on the subsequen appearing under the container disk which appears as "Time_Machine" I am getting the following message:


Running First Aid on “Time_Machine” (disk6s2)


Repairing file system.

Volume could not be unmounted.

Restoring the original state found as mounted.

The repair cannot be performed because one or more volumes are mounted. : (-69565)


Operation failed…


Not sure what that means or whether there is a work-around.

I'd try repairing the Internal drive...


Start with this of M1 or M2 Mac...


On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.

Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.

Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.

Select a volume.

Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.

The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

Does the problem occur in Safe Mode? 


Restart normally.

Start with this if IntelMac...


Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.


Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
