I have 27" iMac 2017 with an original HD drive, my friend's 27" SSD runs so much faster. Can anyone suggest what to do, install internally, or run as an external drive using Thunderbolt? I watched the MacSales tutorial, and even if it does not look complicated, I would not take a chance to put it inside. I have a clone drive, but I don't want anything to happen to the motherboard.

It's a complex and frequently messed upgrade to attempt to do an internal SSD. Also, there is really not a large increase in performance. Buy yourself the OWC Envoy Pro SX and use the directions in How to setup an external SSD as your startup disk and you are done. You will not risk bricking your iMac and will be done MUCH MUCH MUCH quicker and will be very pleased with the performance figures.
Thank you very much rkaufmann! I thought using the external as a start-up was easy, just go to preference and switch the startup to an external one. Well, I have to follow the guide, I guess. Can I still use my internal as a clone drive?
Before purchasing the external OWC Envoy, I decided to run the clone drive SSD by Samsung. Unfortunately, some plugins do not work as they require a serial number, which checks with the third-party seller who is no longer in business. Like AutoFX, stand-alone, and Photoshop plus others. So, I have a feeling that I may have to install SSD internally. I have a feeling, that these 3rd party plugins think that the clone drive is another computer, I guess.
Any solution that the external SSD clone would have the same identity as the internal HD?
