mic not registering in iMovie

I purchased a new lavalier mic so that I could wear it when creating YouTube videos. It had a pin plug connection, so I needed to purchase a USB-C adapter so that I could plug it into my mic. When I first tried it, the sound was barely audible, so I went to settings to try to adjust it and now the mic shows the volume at zero and won't let me adjust it. Help!
