Silence from VO on FCPx
Why might a USB microphone that registers on my Mac Mini running FCPx not deliver a recording into the audio track the editor generates in the timeline? Thanks for any hints.

Open System Settings/Sound and check that the USB mic's Input volume is set to maximum.
Does your mic work with other apps like QT Player?

Your reply sounded a bit unusual. By "restarting" FCP I meant turning it off and back on again . . . same with the computer as this can eradicate glitches.
Deleting the preferences can also cure weird behaviour . . . shutdown FCP and hold down the option and command keys whilst you launch it until a window pops up asking if you want to delete the preferences (aka settings).
Click on the Delete button in the window.
Have you tried restarting FCP or the computer and it's always worth deleting the preferences when something doesn't function properly.
Hi(bonjour),
Your gain is set to zero….
What specific make/model of mic are you using?
Does it have a power or mute button physically on it?
What Ian said, plus, when you are in the settings there, do you see the levels respond to the mic?
Thanks Michel - my photo ( not perfect I accept ) indicates that ‘Input Gain’is preset at 8 - and I did try altering that to 9 & then 10. The indicator arrow moved to the right but neither change produced any recording. Is there another ‘gain’ I should be looking for. Thanks for your help - much appreciated.
Thanks Ian - great to hear from you! Have taken a bit of a break from FCP recently - too much else going on in our lives - but am determined to keep moving forward. Your encouragement certainly appreciated. M.
Not a very expensive new mic. Very basic and certainly does not need phantom power. So I’m pressing on with my 50 year old, faithful AKG 19c and a new A to D unit - things are improving. Thanks for the tip. If there was a Helpful option associated with your welcome response I’d happily click it. Thanks for the note. Michael.
First of all, no, USB mics don't use phantom power cause, well, "USB."
Second, that AKG 19c is a very nice voice mic. It should give you a fuller more well rounded sound than a USB mic. I'd stick with that anyway.
Don't photograph your screen . . . take a screenshot.
Hold down shift and command and press 3
The little thumbs up icon below posts is the "helpful" indicator.
