Apple Music won't play songs from library (but will stream)

Updated my 2019 MBP to Sonoma 14.4 this morning. I know the Apple Music app updated too as there was a 'welcome to Music' modal.


Opened music and tried to play a file from my music library and it fails silently. This happens for all tracks in my library (which syncs via iCloud) but not if I stream a track from Apple Music. It's true whether the original files came from Apple or CD rips. However, VLC plays the 'refused' local files without hesitation.


Rebooted the Mac. Signed out of iCloud (in the music app) and signed back in again. Same issue.


What do I try next?

I found a way to fix it. I tried to import a CD and got a -54 error. Which I learned is a permissions error.


This led me to try the following: In Music->Settings->Files, I pressed Change and changed my Music Media Folder Location to some other random folder and then pressed OK. Music then tried to update the library but I clicked "NO" when it asked me if I wanted it to move all files.


I then went back to Music->Settings-Files and changed the folder back to the right location. Then I pressed OK and once more "NO" to reorganize. After a few minutes Music finished "updating" my library and it is now working again.
