After Sonoma 14.4 update USB hub not working on MacBook

I have my MacBook (MacBook Pro 16 M2 Pro) connected to my monitor (Gigabyte M34WQ 34 Inch IPS Ultrawide WQHD (3440 x 1440)) via a thunderbolt 3 cable.

I have my keyboard and mouse connected to the USB ports in my monitor.

After updating, my keyboard and mouse are no longer being detected on my MacBook.

Before updating, it was working fine.

I can't find anything online about this issue

Can anyone help?

thanks

Solution for USB Port Issues After MacOS Update (14.4.1) with External Monitor

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share my experience after recently updating to MacOS 14.4.1, hoping it might help others facing similar issues.

Problem:

Following the update, not a single USB port on my LG27UN880P-B monitor, which had a Logitech Bolt USB receiver for my mouse connected, worked. Despite lengthy discussions with Apple Support and numerous attempts to solve the issue (resetting the monitor, resetting the mouse, safe boot, restarting, reconnecting cables), the problem persisted. Interestingly, the USB ports also failed when connected to a Windows laptop, which had never been an issue before.

Solution:

As a last resort, I unplugged the monitor's power cable while it was on and displaying an image. Surprisingly, this made the USB hub work perfectly again.

It appears that the update may have caused a surge or similar fault at the USB ports, which could be fixed by simply unplugging the monitor's power cable while operational.

So, simply trying to unplug the cable while the monitor is operating... was the only thing that helped in my case.

Future Solution:

To avoid future issues, I strongly recommend disconnecting all cable connections to external devices like hubs and monitors before performing system updates and closing all open applications.

I hope this solution can assist others experiencing similar problems after an update.

Lösung für USB-Port-Probleme nach MacOS-Update (14.4.1) mit externem Monitor

Hallo zusammen,

I had the same issue with an LG monitor connected by USB3 -- the mouse plugged into the USB hub on the monitor didn't work after the 14.4 upgrade.

Rebooting, reconnecting wires, etc, didn't help.

However, this worked:

  1. System Settings->Privacy&Security->Allow accessories to connect->Ask every time
  2. Turn off monitor (at the wall is best) and disconnect it
  3. Reboot
  4. Reconnect the monitor then turn it on.

At this point I got a popup asking if I agreed to the assessory and I answered yes. Since then the mouse works fine. Hopefully it will stay that way.

I got Sonoma to prompt the "Allow accessories to connect" by

  1. open the laptop lid
  2. disconnect the display usb-c cable
  3. change the "Allow accessories to connect" setting to "always ask"
  4. logout the user
  5. log back in
  6. reconnect the display usb-c cable
  7. now Sonoma should prompt for the permission

I also noticed, that if I then close the laptop lid, disconnect the cable and plug it back in, Sonoma forgets the setting and the USB hub stops working again.

Folks are pointing out that the issue started with Sonoma 14.4. In aggregate they are pointing out that it happens with various devices attached via usb to an external hub attached by usbc to the Mac (this issue is not specific to a particular external hub, or a particular brand but specific to Mac running Sonoma 14.4). They are also pointing out that the same issue, with exactly the same hardware cannot be reproduced when using pre Sonoma 14.4 OS (so we are not dealing with malfunctioning external hubs).

The issue happens when Mac comes out of sleep or when the hub is disconnected and then connected back. The only way to fix it is make the hub do a hard reboot (disconnect from Mac, disconnect from power completely). All of this is more pronounced in hubs that are built into the monitored or attached to their own power supply as the "fix" requires going and plugging the power cable out of the monitor or hub.

I just spoke with a Senior Advisor at Apple about this issue.

My setup: wired mechanical keyboards (I have about a dozen) connected to my iogear GUS432 KVM connected to my LG 38WK95C display's USB hub connected via USB-C to my 14" M1 Pro MacBook Pro.

My flavor of this issue: the other 3 peripherals connected to my KVM - mouse, mic and webcam - all work fine. It's only my keyboards that don't when connected via the KVM. Also, my keyboards work normally when connected via KVM to the other machine on the KVM - a Windows-based Intel NUC. Finally, the few keyboards I have that can also connect wirelessly via Bluetooth work fine over Bluetooth, just not in wired mode via the KVM.

We ruled out the LG display's USB hub by connecting the KVM directly to the MBP so that the connectivity is like-for-like with the Windows machine. Still no dice. I also tried the Settings > Privacy & Security > Allow accessories to connect: always settings change, with no luck.

The SA said that most likely there was a security vulnerability that was addressed in 14.4 and that in such cases where third-party peripherals are at play Apple typically won't send these cases up to Engineering. My options are to either downgrade the machine, which requires a complete reinstall, or to reach out to iogear as manufacturers will need to conduct their own testing and if they find this to be a big enough problem, they have more clout with Apple than you or I as individual customers.

This truly sucks. I've been happily using this KVM for 2 years.

Good grief ! I didn't have a problem before with 14.1 but now after installing 14.4.1, my M2 MacBook Air no longer recognises my keyboard attached to the hub on a Dell U3219Q display connected by USB-C, even after multiple reboots. I didn't have a problem with 14.4 so instead of fixing the problem, 14.4.1 seems to have created the problem for me !

[Update - so looks like the problem has to do with the "allow accessories to connect" setting. I had to change the setting to "Ask Every time" so that the next time I connected the monitor, I had to give it permission for it to connect. After that I changed the setting back to "Ask for new accessories" and it continues to work even after unplugging the monitor and plugging it back.

I have one bluetooth and one USB keyboard so it's possible that immediately after upgrading to 14.4.1 I had answered "no" to allowing the USB keyboard to connect. Alternatively, Sonoma 14.4/14.4.1 has trouble keeping track of devices that have been connected through a hub and forgot that I had already approved the keyboard before the upgrade. ]

I had a similar issue with the latest Sonoma update 14.4.1. I was using “pass through power” via a USB C hub that had my HDMI, 1 x 4TB SSD, 1 x 5TB spinning disk & supplying power to a USB C Port for syncing iPads. They all failed to work once the update was applied. A support call to Apple found that “Electron paramagnetic resonance“ was the blame. The latest patch will not let you use pass through power is the output of the hub is “questioned” by the OS. I went back to using the Mag Safe power adapter and the hubs now work. I also found out that Apple support was notified ~March 27th 2024 of this restriction.

My USB hub with SSD was not working after the 14.4.1 update on my M2 Mac Mini. It was working on 14.4 but the “bug” update apparently caused it to stop being recognized. What worked for me is I shut it down and unplugged everything and then started up the Mac Mini without the USB Hub plugged in. I plugged it in waited a while and it was finally recognized again.

How are you powering the MacBook? Are you using MagSafe or connecting a USB C cable to the power supply and pass through the hub? I posted this earlier:
