After Sonoma 14.4 update USB hub not working on MacBook

I have my MacBook (MacBook Pro 16 M2 Pro) connected to my monitor (Gigabyte M34WQ 34 Inch IPS Ultrawide WQHD (3440 x 1440)) via a thunderbolt 3 cable.

I have my keyboard and mouse connected to the USB ports in my monitor.

After updating, my keyboard and mouse are no longer being detected on my MacBook.

Before updating, it was working fine.

I can't find anything online about this issue

Can anyone help?

thanks

Solution for USB Port Issues After MacOS Update (14.4.1) with External Monitor

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share my experience after recently updating to MacOS 14.4.1, hoping it might help others facing similar issues.

Problem:

Following the update, not a single USB port on my LG27UN880P-B monitor, which had a Logitech Bolt USB receiver for my mouse connected, worked. Despite lengthy discussions with Apple Support and numerous attempts to solve the issue (resetting the monitor, resetting the mouse, safe boot, restarting, reconnecting cables), the problem persisted. Interestingly, the USB ports also failed when connected to a Windows laptop, which had never been an issue before.

Solution:

As a last resort, I unplugged the monitor's power cable while it was on and displaying an image. Surprisingly, this made the USB hub work perfectly again.

It appears that the update may have caused a surge or similar fault at the USB ports, which could be fixed by simply unplugging the monitor's power cable while operational.

So, simply trying to unplug the cable while the monitor is operating... was the only thing that helped in my case.

Future Solution:

To avoid future issues, I strongly recommend disconnecting all cable connections to external devices like hubs and monitors before performing system updates and closing all open applications.

I hope this solution can assist others experiencing similar problems after an update.

Lösung für USB-Port-Probleme nach MacOS-Update (14.4.1) mit externem Monitor

Hallo zusammen,

After upgrading to 14.4.1 my (2) LG 4K displays no longer connect via USB-C. I've reset NVRAM, restarted, changed the 'Allow accessories to connect' option, powered off displays, etc, but I'm not being prompted at all to accept new devices. I didn't have this issue with 14.4.

Frustrating...

Update, tried it again and was able to get it working. Had to power off the monitors and leave them off for 5 minutes. Allow accessories to connect is set to "Always". Changing it back to "Ask for New Accessories now.

Thank you!!! The answer from FloridaUser2024 helped me. 14.4.1 on Macbook Pro 13".

FIX:

----

  1. Unplugged power going into my hub.
  2. Unplugged hub from Macbook USB-C port.
  3. Restart Macbook. It suggested I'd restarted to fix a problem and offered to re-open applications. I declined.
  4. Plugged hub into USB-C port.
  5. Connected devices now recognized.
  6. Plugged power back into hub, Macbook charging, devices remain connected.

Hope this helps others.

I have a Mac mini M1 and after updating to Sonoma 14.5 I am having the same issue as others. Both my HP Envy 4500 printer and Logi C270 external camera stopped working. Actually, I think this may have happened when I did 14.4 update. Both the above are connected to an Insignia (Best Buy) hub I purchased in 2020. I disconnected both the printer and camera and plugged them directly into the M1 and both work. So, is the hub that old that the update doesn't recognize it? Should I just buy a new hub that hopefully recognizes Sonoma?

I was having the same issue after upgrading to 14.5. No usb-c hub device was even recognized. I also did not see "Allow accessories to connect" option. What I discovered was when I opened parallels Desktop and had a windows VM running and I plugged the USB-C Hub in. I would then get the option to use the hub on my mac or windows. I choose mac and it works fine. Hoping they will fix this in 15 but for now I have a work around. Hope this helps.

Hi everyone!

The update to 14.4.1 fixed the peripheral connection issue. However, one problem persists. When I disconnect the USB-C cable from the MacBook, upon reconnecting, it doesn't recognize the monitor and the image. I have to restart the system to get back to normal. Apple is struggling to fix this issue.

Long but I tried:

I used all the same wired and material with a Macbook pro intel base with SONOMA 14.4 and my Huion pen display, wheel control and pencil were working find in my software for drawings. I replug it 3 times to make sure and it’s ok. Before and after all apple recommend updates.

in the other hand, all the same equipment on Mac Studio M2 is not working! I trie to power off and back on method, monitor is detected and functional put not detected by the Huion driver that makes it impossible for the pencil to operate.

I tried to restart and USBC KAMVAS 24 (4k) not detected. This means screen is functional but noting is working for the drawing side (pencil detection).

I uninstall drivers, reinstall… uninstall drivers again, and reinstall previous version of drivers incase, tried 3 reboots in between… nothing works. I Disconnect all my accessories and used only the drawing tablet in case, nothing. I reconnected all accessories on by one and even tried a sd card. Everything is working except my pen display accessories because the driver’s cannot recognize my accessories plugged! After several communications with Huion factory. They confirmed to me that they can’t do more than wait for the next Apple update. Multiple sites are showing issues with M2 and SONOMA 14.4 with multiple connections. Was this out too soon? Please Fix ASAP

Start by disconnecting and reconnecting the Thunderbolt 3 cable that connects your MacBook to your monitor. Sometimes, simply re-establishing the connection can help resolve connectivity issues.

Next, try restarting both your MacBook and your monitor. Restarting can sometimes clear out any temporary software glitches that may be causing the problem.

If that doesn't work, check the System Information on your MacBook to see if it detects the USB hub on your monitor. You can do this by going to the Apple menu > About This Mac > System Report. Under the Hardware section, click on USB. If your monitor's USB hub is listed here, it means that your MacBook recognizes it, and the issue may be with the peripherals themselves or their connections.

If your monitor's USB hub isn't listed in the System Information, there may be an issue with the Thunderbolt connection or the monitor itself. In this case, try connecting your peripherals directly to your MacBook's USB ports to see if they work. If they do, the issue likely lies with the USB hub on your monitor.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it's possible that the macOS update may have introduced a compatibility issue with your monitor's USB hub. In that case, you may need to reach out to Official Apple Support for further assistance or consider contacting the manufacturer of your monitor for any available updates or troubleshooting steps specific to your model.

I have my M2 MBP attached to a Dell S3221qs (think that's the model number). I don't use the usb hub in the monitor. However I do have an OWC thunderbolt 3 dock connected. Mac doesn't see it or my backup drive no matter what I do. tested a generic usb-c hub I have with the same results, not seeing external usb/thunderbolt hubs.

I've tried all the suggestions offered without success. looks like apple missed a big bug on this release. the QA folks missed one big time.

I had a similar experience, but in my case, after the upgrade, my M1 Macbook stopped recognizing the monitors connected to my Targus DOCK192. It did recognize my USB connected mouse and keyboard. I was able to get it working again by explicitly installing the driver from Targus. One monitor was recognized right away, the other didn't come up until after I powered it down/up. I did other things along the way for which I have no idea if they contributed, including restarting the hub, reconnecting the monitors, rebooting my Mac with the power button, running a utility from Targus, changing "Allow accessories to connect" to Ask Every Time. I also connect a monitor using a StarTech hub at home, but there were no issues after the upgrade.
