After Sonoma 14.4 update USB hub not working on MacBook

I have my MacBook (MacBook Pro 16 M2 Pro) connected to my monitor (Gigabyte M34WQ 34 Inch IPS Ultrawide WQHD (3440 x 1440)) via a thunderbolt 3 cable.

I have my keyboard and mouse connected to the USB ports in my monitor.

After updating, my keyboard and mouse are no longer being detected on my MacBook.

Before updating, it was working fine.

I can't find anything online about this issue

Can anyone help?

thanks

Solution for USB Port Issues After MacOS Update (14.4.1) with External Monitor

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share my experience after recently updating to MacOS 14.4.1, hoping it might help others facing similar issues.

Problem:

Following the update, not a single USB port on my LG27UN880P-B monitor, which had a Logitech Bolt USB receiver for my mouse connected, worked. Despite lengthy discussions with Apple Support and numerous attempts to solve the issue (resetting the monitor, resetting the mouse, safe boot, restarting, reconnecting cables), the problem persisted. Interestingly, the USB ports also failed when connected to a Windows laptop, which had never been an issue before.

Solution:

As a last resort, I unplugged the monitor's power cable while it was on and displaying an image. Surprisingly, this made the USB hub work perfectly again.

It appears that the update may have caused a surge or similar fault at the USB ports, which could be fixed by simply unplugging the monitor's power cable while operational.

So, simply trying to unplug the cable while the monitor is operating... was the only thing that helped in my case.

Future Solution:

To avoid future issues, I strongly recommend disconnecting all cable connections to external devices like hubs and monitors before performing system updates and closing all open applications.

I hope this solution can assist others experiencing similar problems after an update.

Lösung für USB-Port-Probleme nach MacOS-Update (14.4.1) mit externem Monitor

Hallo zusammen,

Interesting discovery here after doing some testing.

Basically same issue for me, except I have three LG monitors connected via TB3 cable directly to the MacBook Pro 14" M2 Max. It seems in my case, whichever monitor I connect first will get its USB hub recognized and connected, while the subsequent two will simply not have their USB hubs detected.

It's as if only a single external USB hub can be connected to the MacBook, and once that's been connected, no additional ones will be accepted.

I guess I'll be opening a support ticket for this...

Same Issue here. I have a MacBook Pro M2 Pro and a Dell Monitor with a built in usb hub. Mac and Monitor connect via USB-C connector. Until Sonoma 14.4 it all worked fine. After 14.4, every time my Mac is put to "sleep" when it powers back up, the external monitor does come back up but any usb devices connected to the monitor hub get lost. Power cycling the monitor, or unplugging and plugging the monitor into the Mac does not help.

While my MacBook Pro does not see the devices, if I unplug and then plug the monitor into my MacBook Air running Ventura, all devices come online. Same with my windows laptop. Which leads me to believe that this is clearly a bug introduced in Ventura 14.4. Please fix.

I have the same issue with my MacBook Pro M2 Max 64GB RAM and monitor Dell U3219Q; none of the USB peripherals connected to the Monitor's USB hub work.

On the contrary, all peripherals work fine when I attach a Windows computer to the Dell Monitor. In addition, I check every USB peripheral by attaching them directly to the Mac, and of course, they are working.

I rebooted the Mac and detached the power plug from the Monitor, trying any configurations or sequences of rebooting as possible. Nothing is working since the update to Sonoma 14.4

Please, Apple, jump in and fix this issue soon.

I have a similar problem - everything on my M2 Pro worked fine on 14.4 but as soon as I restarted 14.4.1 my external monitor was no longer recognised, although peripherals still worked fine. I have traced the problem to a Selore plug-in hub which I have had to remove, and found a temporary workaround to give me my peripherals by using an old hub with a connecting lead (rather than direct plug-in) but I have found no way of getting the Mac to accept power this way. The monitor itself will now only connect if plugged in directly to one of the Mac's integral ports, using a USB-C to HDMI cable - leaving me with only one port on which I have to choose between peripherals and power! I also now have no way to connect to ethernet. Did no-one at Apple bother to actually test this 'fix'?

I have a similar problem. I have MacStudio and after updating to Sonoma 14.4, the hub in Dell u4919dw to which I connected the keyboard, mouse and sound card does not work. Interestingly, when I connect a mouse and keyboard to the rear USB-A ports, it doesn't work either. The sound card connected to the rear USB-A port works properly. If I want to connect a keyboard and mouse, I have to use an external hub connected to the USB-C port. Does anyone have an idea to solve this problem?

I'm encountering a similar issue and have tried troubleshooting it with two Mac models:

  • MacBook Pro 14-inch, 2023, Apple M2 Pro and 32 GB RAM, running Sonoma 14.4.
  • MacBook Pro 16-inch, 2023, Apple M2 Pro and 32 GB RAM, running Sonoma 14.4.

I'm utilizing a Dell P2720DC monitor, which typically functions flawlessly when connected to the Mac via USB-C Thunderbolt. However, ever since updating to Sonoma 14.4, the USB-HUB on the monitor appears to have ceased functioning properly, that is, no USB device connected works anymore.l

I tried the best answers from the community but nothing works for me.

I'm having the same issue on an M1 iMac with an external Seagate Ultra Slim portable hard drive I use as my Time Machine backup. Called in to support and they said there was nothing they could do, figured the hard drive might be fried. Yesterday, it showed up on my desktop and was working fine. Today, I made it a point to look at something and sure enough, it's not there again. Definitely an operating system issue. Just waiting on a fix now.

Hi everyone!

The update to 14.4.1 fixed the peripheral connection issue. However, one problem persists. When I disconnect the USB-C cable from the MacBook, upon reconnecting, it doesn't recognize the monitor and the image. I have to restart the system to get back to normal. Apple is struggling to fix this issue.

I've been using Mac for 25 years so I don't have to worry about computers, connections, and commands. Unfortunately, it seems like that time has come to an end.
