Add gmail to mail accounts on iMac OSX10.11

Trying to add my gmail account to mail on iMac running OSX 10.11 comes up with a Google Invalid 400 request.

I have tried all the recommended suggestions but all failed to complete the process.

iMac, OS X 10.11

Google has strengthened its security and the old Mac operating systems (OS X or macOS) are no longer compatible.

To connect your Gmail account on your Mac:

  • First of all, delete the Gmail account.
  • Then, you will have to create an application password: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en.
  • Finally, when you add the Gmail account in Mail on your Mac, choose "Other" and not "Google". Fill in your email address and application password.
