After 17.4 update HDMI CEC issue on Apple TV

After updating my Apple TV to the recent tvOS 17.4, the CEC control via HDMI is lost. Afterwards I have reset Apple TV to its default values, but it did not solve the problem. I also cycled the CEC control off/on (Viera Link) on my Panasonic LX1500 OLED - without any difference. Does anyone here experience the same issue?

To everyone discussing AppleTV remote (black, silver, or whatever): This thread is not about a remote that came with the AppleTV. It's about television remote (Samsung, LG, Panasonic, etc.), that through the magic of HDMI CEC (over HDMI cable) can also control the AppleTV. These remotes don't have to be "learned", they just work out of the box. But now, at least with 17.4 and 1st generation 4K AppleTV, they don't.

My solution to this issue was to unplug the power cord to the Apple TV while it was onscreen, wait for the signal to the tv to drop, then plug it back in. I did this about 10 times until a pop up appeared asking if I wanted to recover the TVos. Selecting that option eventually brought up a code on my iPhone to enter to begin the recovery process. Took about 25 minutes to reload the TVos, then restart the Apple TV. My Samsung remote then worked fine again. No apps or settings lost. Login remained unchanged.

Massive headache. I have 20+ reports from our clients that their Crestron does not control the Apple TVs and no video. Apple does not care, they will just tell everyone to buy ATV's for every display and disregard integration and one location for all AV sources. Thanks for making us money and clients hating your product, we'll be pushing them to Roku if this continues.

It's about television remote (Samsung, LG, Panasonic, etc.), that through the magic of HDMI CEC (over HDMI cable) can also control the AppleTV.

Many users in this thread seem to assume that, but that doesn’t make it true. CEC has nothing to do with using a third party remote for the Apple TV box. These are two independent features. By even mentioning CEC, people are looking in the wrong direction, and will never find a solution there. (The tvOS update may still play a role, though. That so many brands were affected around the same time, is a strong indicator for that.)

The third party remote uses IR to send navigation command to the Apple TV box, and also uses IR to send volume control signals to the TV or audio system. The only way to involve CEC in this, is that select AV receivers can understand volume control signals from the Apple TV box, if so configured.

Use other remotes to control Apple TV - Apple Support

Some TV remotes are designed to work additionally for some other devices (e.g. my 2021 Samsung TV remote). If needed, configure through the TV to handoff controls for the active HDMI device. Those settings may require having CEC active, but the commands do not go from TV to Apple TV box; the remote sends commands to the Apple TV box directly. Note that this didn’t work for me anymore after updating to 17.4 initially, until I connected the TV through Bluetooth. CEC kept working fine, though.

  • recover 17.4 but the full version, not just the Delta Package Apple pushes out as the update

Full version, delta package? Please explain

btw, I ordered a new AppleTV 4K which won’t suffer from the CEC bug. And I talked to Apple technical support and have an appointment for this afternoon to have mine de-bricked. So I’ll have that one to give away.

SocialSpit I ended up with an interesting story. I took the AppleTV to the closest Apple Store but was told that they lacked the resources to fix it and offered to send it out for repair. I decided to send it in myself and have it repaired and returned to my home. Apple sent me a shipping box but it didn’t include the return label. Speaking with Apple tech support discovered a problem preventing the creation of that label with promise they would sort it out quickly soon after I received a message from that Apple Store to bring my bricked AppleTV to swap with the refurbed unit. So I did that. Today I received notice from FedEx of a delivery scheduled for Monday. It’s likely that will be another AppleTV 4K. I think I’ll need to again speak with tech support.
