After 17.4 update HDMI CEC issue on Apple TV

After updating my Apple TV to the recent tvOS 17.4, the CEC control via HDMI is lost. Afterwards I have reset Apple TV to its default values, but it did not solve the problem. I also cycled the CEC control off/on (Viera Link) on my Panasonic LX1500 OLED - without any difference. Does anyone here experience the same issue?

Apple released tvOS 17.5 today and I confirmed it contains the fix for the HDMI CEC issue with TV remotes. You can update in Settings -> System -> Software Updates.

Regarding the latest available firmware update, it appears to have repaired the CEC issue beautifully.

However, the other common issue, where Samsung (and other) audio devices cannot be controlled via Bluetooth from the Apple remote, that issue is still in effect, and it has NOT been repaired with the update.

When I connect my sound bar via Bluetooth, the Apple remote causes the volume indicator to go up and down, but the actual volume coming out of my Samsung device stays at 100% full blast.

The only way so far that I can continue to use the Apple remote to control my Samsung volume is to keep using the Samsung plugged in directly into my RCA TV via “light pipe”. That way, through a combination of HDMI and infrared, I can change the volume with my Apple remote. But it is still simply not as effective as using the Apple remote for a Bluetooth device. And, it does not show you the volume indicator on the right side of the screen, as it does when it is monitoring a Bluetooth audio device.

So, the CEC issue is fixed, the Bluetooth volume issue is not fixed.

I had posted that a month after this post came out, my Apple TV 4K started syncing with my Sony Bravia again, without any update to either device. But as before, once I unplugged them to do some house keeping, they stopped syncing all over again. And the problem here is not Sony, Samsung, LG, Panasonic or every other TV brand, it’s the ****** Apple TV 4K software.

LG 55”-OLED with Magic Remote

Apple TV Model A1842 running OS 17.4

Remote stopped working then my dad came over and it worked…for a day. Tried CEC on and off. No new updates available on TV or ATV, restarted, “reset and updated”, and tried “learn remote”. When learning new remote, the indicator light on the box will toggle on and off but no action on the screen which tells me the ATV sees the signal from the remote but doesn’t recognize the signal even after holding the desired button after several minutes. This leads me to assume the issue is with the Apple TV possibly after a recent update to v17.4

I too have the same issue after upgrading to tvOS 7.4 on 10-Mar-2024. Tried plugging on the other Television as well and experienced the same issue. Spoke to Apple Support today (11-Mar-2024) and he has taken my request and requested to update the Analytics captured from the Apple TV. Any further updates I receive, shall keep you posted.

Yes- I was using the CEC in my RCA TV remote. It was fine until 17.4. I think this issue is related to the volume control suddenly not working for my Samsung 4.1 soundbar. The BT level indicator goes up and down but the actual audio level is stuck at full blast. The mute button wasn’t working initially but now it is. A smaller set of BT speakers does work. But CEC? Broken beyond all measure. I’ve had my ATV 4K 1st edition since tvOS 13, and nothing like this has ever happened. My RCA remote has been working through 14, 15, 16 and 17, until 17.4.

I finally got my CEC working, RCA 4KTV RLDED5098-UHD. ATV4K 1st Gen. It just suddenly started working. The volume for my Samsung HW-A47M is still stuck at full blast, although the volume level indicator goes up and down, and the mute works. I still have to use the volume on the actual Samsung remote. I’ve been disconnecting and reconnecting, my silver Apple TV remote.

I did remove and reinsert the batteries from my RCA remote, maybe other users having this issue with CEC should try that.

Maybe there is something about this affecting only first generation ATV, if anybody has this issue with a second generation, a TV 4K, I’d like to hear about it. It seems that this might be affecting only certain peripheral hardware. I have seen the same issue with other Samsung sound bar users.

Family-JK: I’ve done that a dozen times. No soap. However, removing my remote from the vicinity (or shutting it off) is certainly something I’ll try, while I recharge my other two remotes. I have one other silver remote and my original black one. It never occurred to me the issue could be the remote. My 1st silver remote worked swell for 6 Mos, then suddenly it would act like I was pressing the down arrow. It became unusable but I can certainly use it to test this out.

Good idea- thanks.

True, Lewis, but I am glad that they brought that up because I have had that same thing happen to me. But what makes me think it might be slightly related is that he said that it started happening after the update. As soon as I get my other two remotes fully charged, I am going to d/c my current remote, and see what happens when I reconnect those. My original silver remote suddenly went bugsputz on me exactly as he described, at the time I did not think it had anything to do with any particular firmware update, but it might have been… I will have to check the date when I ordered my latest remote, that will tell me what firmware was being distributed at the time…

PG: I hope so for your sake, but in my case, my CEC was working for two days then I rebooted the TV and it does not work anymore, my Apple TV is showing up in the list of devices on my RCA remote. But it simply isn’t responding anymore. Grr.

I wonder how many of us are using Plex for Apple TV? Maybe that app interferes with Bluetooth response… because I got an update for that about the same time. I am a beta tester, so I can go back to a previous build to see if there is some correlation here. And… Well, my mute button started working there. I have about 3 other builds I can go back to so I’ll try those one by one…
