Apple touch icon not displayed by Safari (even if site has apple touch icon)

As you can verify directly, the apple touch icon is configured properly (with link rel="apple-touch-icon") for this website:

https://newsletter.page/apple-touch-icon.png


However Safari on MacOS (in the Home Screen, under "frequently visited") keeps showing a default placeholder (letter "N" with blue background) instead of the actual apple touch icon.


Why Safari doesn't display the icon?
