i can’t activate my apple tv. It’s brand new.
i’ve tried;
restarting router
restarting apple tv
trying to configure via iphone and manual
tried to connect to wifi, and wifi hotspot.
i just get the same error. My network is both 2.4ghz and 5ghz with wpa2 security. Neither of those work.
what can I do to make it work?
I had the same problem today, fresh out of the box my older model but brand new Apple TV (4K, 1st generation) kept giving the same message - provided a self generated IP-address when connected with ethernet to the router. Drove me nuts for two hours, resetting the router etc nothing worked.
Eventually, as a last resort I connected the ATV with USB to my Mac and restored it to factory settings. Lo and behold: it came originally with tvOS 9, but after restoring it had upgraded to tvOS 17.
And then.... it worked flawlessly!
So if you have the same problems, hook it up to your computer and restore the OS to the latest version. It might help, as it helped me.

Yes - Apple won't support and may block if the source is unauthorized. An unauthorized reseller is by definition tainted. Return and repurchase from the online store is your the only option.

Ok, do you think it will make a difference? It’s not like the the resellers are tainting the apple tvs before selling them?
Elkjøp is an Apple Authorized Reseller. They’re fine. It is quite common for the Locator to not list Apple TV box resellers separately. The ‘All Products’ resellers can sell Apple TV boxes as well.
