Can't delete gmail in inbox, only archive swipe

Gmail behaves slightly differently to iCloud mail in this regard, unless you change a setting for it to send deleted mail to the Deleted Mailbox.

Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts > [your Gmail account name] > Account settings > Advanced > Move Discarded Messages Into:

at this point the two choices are Deleted Mailbox and Archive Mailbox. The latter seems to be the default setting, but this is the place to change it to the Deleted Mailbox.

Choose Deleted Mailbox, then when you swipe left on a Gmail message you will see the red badge and the bin.
