Keyboard not working on M1 MacBook Pro

Hi

a couple weeks ago my keyboard starting misbehaving, it was almost like the keyboard had turned into hot keys and every key activated some other function. Caps lock would get stuck on for ages or I couldn’t type at all.

I tried restarting and then booting in safe mode but issue has persisted. I activated the accessibility keyboard viewer and it seemed that the left shift key was getting stuck down digitally, so I used karibiner elements to deactivate it and changed fn key to left shift. This however had not seems to have fixed the issue.

Left Command was also getting stuck down so I deactivated that. However control and left option also seem to be getting stuck down digitally. Right command and option seem to be ok. Pressing caps locks seems to clear the virtual keyboard but doesn’t necessarily stop the issue persisting. In fact if I repeatedly press the command keys the keyboard seems to just make the error sound each tap and doesn’t do anything. I also disabled right shift as that seemed to also be getting stuck virtually.

To be honest it seems to be getting worse and I’m really not sure the cause or what to do. Could a hard reset fix this or is it a damage issue? (Keys look fine, don’t think I’ve spilled water on it). Have updated to latest os.

I could get an external keyboard in meantime?

resetting computer gets rid of the error sound but issue comes back again.

also to note my right arrow key hasn’t been working for a while but I didn’t do anything about it, perhaps mistakably.

video example here can provide more.

edit: even with both shift keys deactivated it still seems to be getting stuck down (lit up) on the virtual keyboard or stuck in caps lock when nothing is lit up
