These air pods were purchased through the apple online store. I didn't like they way they fit into my ears so I didn't use them much. I sold them and the buyer stated he can't get his phone to verify the air pods. I disconnected the air pods from my phone and from my iCloud. What is wrong?

Someone buying AirPods may want to verify that they are genuine Apple AirPods
There is a way to do that by entering the AirPods Serial number online.
Eg:
How to: Find the serial number of your AirPods - Apple Support
and
Enter serial number to: Check Your Service and Support Coverage - Apple Support
Generally, if the serial number generates an error message then the AirPods may not be genuine.
