XS Max iOS 17.4 Issues

All of a sudden, today my iPhone began acting up after never having a problem since it was purchased. I am on the latest OS version, and have plenty of storage space (and iCloud backup space). All of this happened in the last 6 hrs today:

1) Opening any app, the app window just goes blank and closes - this includes settings.

2) Rebooted phone 3 times and a majority of app icons were missing, however I could see if there were notifications in the location on the screen where the missing icon should be located, and if I pressed that location, the app would open SOMETIMES.

3) Rebooted twice more, and most icons were restored, phone is very sluggish when opening any app, app may open or may go blank, and if it opens it is sluggish.

4) Rebooted again, now wallpaper randomly is black and another reboot may or may not restore the wallpaper.

5) Battery discharged within 2 hrs. As this is an old phone, going 6-8 hrs has been my most recent battery life baseline.

The only other issue I've had since updating to 17.4 last week is:

  • updating my Apple Watch took rebooting both the watch and the phone to get the watch updated (Saturday)
  • AirPods Pro randomly stopped connecting while playing music and phone was on my side. Phone reboot resolved this (last Wednesday)
  • Siri functionality via AirPods stops working randomly, Phone reboot resolved this (this occurred before 17.4, but is almost every other time I open Music, I have to reboot to establish hands free Siri use through the iPods.

Any suggestions?

I had religiously managed my iPhone storage (256GB) by removing music downloads. I have Apple Music and what I noticed yesterday while the above happened is that music I thought I was removing was just re-syncing, and my 256GB drive was completely full. I tried deleting songs from library (which should remove from all devices) but the process hung and my phone ended up crashing in a permanent loop.

Hooked to my MBA M1 and tried to update, which failed. My only option was to do a restore.

This took 3.5 hours but, the process was hands off and worked flawlessly, thanks to iCloud. Everything is working and went to bed with about 75GB sync'd back to the iPhone. Really impressed with how this worked !

Woke up this morning and 198GB has sync'd back to the iPhone, but I'm unable to stop the sync process and attempts to delete music causes the Music app to hang or removing music by using Settings>Storage also causes Settings to hang.

It seems that automatic management of physical space on the iPhone is not working. Has anyone ever experienced this and what was done to resolve it?

Since I don't want a repeat of yesterday, I am going to try and turn off wifi and cellular data on the iPhone, delete a ton of music on another device which SHOULD sync and delete music from all devices, to see if I can get below the 256GB threshold.

Unless someone else has a solution...I love the Apple ecosystem and all, but I'm seriously thinking of going back to an Android phone.

I have issues with Apple Watch 9 which is connecting via bluetooth but nothing else - red phone with line through it and am unable to follow any instructions (I've found, from 2015) to resolve without losing my watch data. Will keep looking.

Since my XS Max is a new phone essentially - I didn't realize that not only my iWatch but all apps/web apps treat it as a new iPhone and has to be re-verified...
