Everytime I restart my Mac Pro, it defaults to the first output device in the list, no matter what other output I choose during the session. I want the default to be built-in Mac Pro speakers unless I select otherwise and if I select otherwise, I would like to know how to change the default to that. I would also like to know how to make Systems Settings open at the page it opened last time I launched it.
Thanks, I was aware of the Login Items feature, but I don't want System Settings to open every time I boot my Mac. My issue was the preselection of a Sound Output Device that was first in the list, instead of inbuilt Mac speakers that I had selected prior to shut down. Even though I use the other devices, I don't always have them switched on.
I called Apple Tech Support and they confirmed this is "not expected behaviour" and recommended on OS update from 14.1.0. Since the most recent macOS update to 14.4.1, this is now being remembered on a reboot, I am pleased to say.

You can not change that behavior with software or settings.
There is a micro switch inside of the headphone port that defaults the MIDI setup to headphone output.
This default action takes place when headphones are plugged in and at startup or restart.
To test, unplug the headphones and restart, then plug in the headphones and restart.
Thank you, that is indeed the problem. Sound settings are remembered only if there is nothing plugged into the Headphone port. I will contact Apple to see if there is a Terminal command that can override this. The other annoyance is that Apple assume that I always want System Settings to open at Appearance.
