iPhone 14 Pro Max Volume is Wacked

I have had to factory reset my NEW phone twice and they even replaced the motherboard once, and yet, I still get this problem, especially after an update. My volume in the control center will literally move on its own and if all my volume is all the way down, the toggle on the left side is set to silent, it will BLAST volume if I push play on anything. Honestly such a PAIN. You’d think after buying a new phone and even having it literally gutted and replaced this wouldn’t be an issue. I’ve deleted all non-essential apps, thinking maybe it was a virus or something, and that seemed to work for a while but just updated to 17.4 and woohoo surprise the volume issue is back in full swing. Makes it really hard to use my phone in public and even harder for my alarms to wake me up in the morning because sometimes they’re silent (????). I have NEVER in my LIFE had such a buggy phone. Even older iPhones never had this problem. My husband is in the tech industry and even he can’t figure out why this is happening. The apple techs in the store weren’t even able to run an audio diagnostic last time I took it in because it was so messed up (hence the multiple factory restarts). Oh, and I can’t send audio messages in iMessage because it thinks I’m already recording something?? Anyone else having this ridiculously annoying issue??

WHIILE LISTENING TO MUSIC set the volume. Use either the side buttons, or the volume control in the Control Center. The volume control in Sounds & Haptics only applies to alerts and other notifications. The Control Center and the volume buttons change the volume in the app you are currently using.

Alarms in the alarm clock are always loud.

Government Alerts are always loud, and override any mute or volume settings.

But it also sounds like your mute switch is broken, or if you have a case on the phone, it is impinging on the switch and turning it on when you think it is off.

I have a very similar problem, except the messaging works fine.

This morning when I went to turn off night mode, my volume was at full. I had left it at zero. When I touched the night mode button the volume moved to about 40%. I moved the volume slider to zero and it popped right back to about 30%. I did it again and it moved to about 20%. I did it again and it finally stayed. This has become a common occurrence.

I also have issues with my ringer/text alert volume lowering on its own. I miss calls and texts because I did not hear the alert, then find the volume turned way down. The volume settings have a mind of their own.

This is my 3rd iPhone and is about 14 months old. I think it has always been an issue with this phone. Previously I had an iPhone 4S and a 6 Plus. I keep them a very long time. They are always in good quality cases and still look brand new 6 years later. The previous phones never did this. It is not an accidental button push or a broken mute switch. Nothing was touching it sitting on my nightstand while charging, and I don’t sleep walk. This thing is possessed. I am considering consulting an exorcist.

The volume setting is not a global setting; it is context-sensitive. So you need to change the setting to what you want while using the app, such as listening to music. It will remember that setting, unless you have the very bad habit of force quitting your music apps from the App Switcher screen.

Another factor is the Mute switch mutes alerts, but not music. That’s logical; you can turn it to Mute when listening to music without the music be interrupted with alerts.

Your iMessage audio issue is not something that I have ever seen posted (or experienced personally) as an issue.

And your phone doesn’t have a virus. There has never existed an iPhone virus.

Thank you for your reply, Lawrence.

So then my question for you is if I turn my volume all the way down in the control center, and it still blasts sound at max volume, how can I fix that? Is that what you mean by the volume in the control center isn’t a global setting? That no matter what I do in the control center it doesn’t actually affect the volume of my phone? Because it used to, it just doesn’t anymore.

And when it comes to the mute button, I understand that’s for alerts, but sometimes when it’s off, alerts are still loud or the Lock Screen sound is explosive. It’s like no matter what I do to turn down my volume, it means nothing (including turning the volume down in Sound and Haptics).
