Verbal directions have stopped from Siri in Carplay

I use the navigator in Apple car play a lot, and I have noticed an abrupt change lately. When my phone is in Carplay mode and I ask Siri to navigate to somewhere it usually gives me turn by turn navigation verbally and the display will show either a Right turn or left turn icon with a "distance to go" indicator. When I used it today it would not "speak" to me, the display will show the usual graphics (a turn icon and distance to go indicator), but it is missing the verbal directions. The only time I heard Siru say anything to me was to warn me that their were multiple police cars up ahead, so it's not as simple as all audio is muted (or volume turned down to 0). What is going on? Why would it be preferable to force me to take my eyes off the road and pay attention to what's on my display while I'm driving? I have a Iphone SE second generation running iOS 17.4..

I have the same problem and it was caused by the 17.4.1 update on my iPhone 13 Pro. It has been working for 8 years on older versions of iPhones and iOS.

Also I plugged my wife's iPhone 7 into CarPlay and it works just fine, i.e. spoken directions are given.

In Settings, Maps, Spoken Direction I have Louder Volume, Directions Pause Spoken Audio, Directions Wake Device and Directions on Radio all On (green).

Last as usual I am the only one that has reported this problem according to Apple Support.
