unable to logon to my macbook air, stuck on macos x. how to move forward without a disk?

Is your Mac stuck on this screen, or one similar to it?
At the upper left of that Mac's menu bar, you ought to find a menu option to restart the Mac. Select it, and if that screen keeps reappearing the correct thing to do is select "Reinstall macOS" as indicated in the above screenshot.
