Does app storage documents and data clean up over time?

So im just wondering if anyone can tell me if the individual apps themselves ever clean up storage/cache usage, I know its probably different from app to app but just wondering if it is generally correct. My messenger went from about 424MB to 390MB today under documents and data in storage so im just wondering if this is the app itself cleaning up data from storage or maybe its something else, no complaints from me i'd like to hope that apps clean up data.

iPhone 14, iOS 17

No, app storage documents and data typically do not clean up automatically over time.

The "Documents and Data" section in your iPhone storage refers to files generated by the app itself, such as:

  • Cache: Temporary files used to speed up app loading
  • Browsing history
  • Login credentials
  • App settings
  • Downloaded files within the app (for offline use)

While some apps might have built-in features to clear the cache, most don't offer automatic cleanup for documents and data.
