There is another Apple cleaning article that approves the use of CERTAIN alcohol-base products for disinfecting, including for displays:

How to clean your Apple products - Apple Support

Note the 70% Isopropyl alcohol mention. There are higher concentrations that may prove damaging. Read the labels! I've bought isopropanol in concentrations as high as 92% for other purposes, bt would not try to clean a computer screen with it.

Microfiber clothes are available practically everywhere and cheap. I would try that first.

Microfiber cloth

The real hazard in screen covers is that, when eventually removed because they wear out, almost all tend to take away part of the anti-glare coating and the entire screen is blotchy. If you mess up your screen, that can only be corrected by replacing the entire display assembly at a cost of US$500-650 depending on screen size. Ouch.

BobTheFisherman has provided you with a link to Apple's recommended method for cleaning your display screen.

What I do is grab two microfiber towels, and dampen one of them...being sure to wring the water out so nothing's dripping. Then I clean the screen with this damp towel, and immediately dry it and buff it with the dry microfiber towel.

A couple of points:

  • Do NOT use that chamois you mentioned. You run the risk of scratching your display.
  • Microfiber towels can be found just about anywhere these days:
    • WalMart
    • Target
    • Most auto supply stores
    • Dollar General stores
    • Costco
    • ...the list is endless
  • Microfiber towels aren't expensive, and it sure seems to me you'd want to spend a couple bucks on some of them to clean the display on your >$1,500 Mac.
  • For stuff the water won't remove, I use a product called Whoosh, which I only use very rarely.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Apple makes a purpose designed polishing cloth for 2021 and later MacBook Pro/Air liquid Retina XDR screens that is better than a microfiber cloth or anything else. I have one and it does a remarkable job by just dragging it dry across the screen.

I have several micro-fiber cloth here but will not use them on these specialty XDR screens.

I don't touch my screens anyway…
