External hard drive no longer reading on Macbook Air

I recently upgraded from Macbook Pro (2017) to Macbook Air M2. I had an external hard drive (WD Elements) that I was using with my Macbook Pro without issue but when I plug it into my Macbook Air, nothing happens. Any ideas why this would be? Did something major change between the old Macbook Pro and the new Macbook Airs that would cause an external hard drive to no longer be compatible?
