ipad 4 mini not entering recovery mode and not detected by itunes

I just got an old ipad mini 4 from a friend. Neither of them are being detected by itunes. I've tried a different USB port, and a different cord. Neither fixed the problem.

iTunes is up to date. My ipad is not. It is still running iOS 12, because the update needs to be done through itunes....

I've tried putting my iPad in recovery mode, but the methods I've tried don't work. Here is what I have tried:

-turning it off, pressing down the home key, and plugging it into the computer. This gives me the "plug + iTunes" screen but it doesn't show up in itunes.

-holding down the power key and the home key. This just turns it off.

-holding down the power key, the home key, and the volume down (or up) key. This just turns it off.

I am using itunes on Windows 10. iTunes and windows are both fully updated.

I know this is a super old-*** device and maybe I should just give up. I was just hoping to have a tablet to bring with me on trips and stuff to mess around and/or entertain my kids.

This is what my itunes looks like:

Are you certain that you have an iPad mini4 - and not an earlier model? You can find the model number here:

Settings > General > About

An iPad mini2 or mini3 can only be updated to iOS 12.5.7. These models cannot be updated to iPadOS 13 or later.

For information, here is a list of the highest version of iOS supported by the older models of iPad (for simplicity - “generations” are shortened to a number) that are restricted in their ability to be updated:

32-bit devices (obsolete)

iPad1 - iOS 5.1.1

iPad2, iPad3 and iPad mini1 - iOS 9.3.5 (WiFi Only models), iOS 9.3.6 (WiFi & Cellular)

iPad4 - iOS 10.3.3 (WiFi Only), iOS 10.3.4 (WiFi & Cellular)

64-bit devices

iPad Air1*, iPad mini2 and iPad mini3* - iOS 12.5.7

iPad Air2, iPad mini4 - iPadOS 15.8.2

iPad5, iPad Pro (9.7"/12.9" first generation) - iPadOS 16.7.6

(*) obsolete

Newer models are all able to be updated to the current version - iPadOS 17.4

  • iPad Pro 12.9" (2nd generation and later)
  • iPad Pro 11" (1st generation and later)
  • iPad Pro 10.5"
  • iPad Air (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad (6th generation and later)
  • iPad mini (5th generation and later)

Start here >>> If you can't activate your iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular) - Apple Support

If you are experiencing difficulties with (re)activation of your iPad, you may have more success if you connect your iPad to a Windows PC (with iTunes for Windows installed) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of macOS). Once connected to your computer, your iPad will be detected - and you should be able to activate using iTunes.

  1. Make sure that you have the latest version of macOS or the latest version of iTunes.
  2. Check that your computer has an Internet connection.
  3. With the cable that came with your iPad, connect your iPad to your computer. Locate your device on your computer.
  4. Wait while your computer detects and activates your iPad:
  • If you see an alert that shows "Set up as New" or "Restore from Backup", it means your iPad is activated.
  • If you get an error message that says the "activation information was invalid" or "activation information could not be obtained from the device", use recovery mode to restore your iPhone.

A restart of your WiFi Router may also be helpful.

To restart you home router, disconnect power - then wait at least 30 seconds before restarting. When you router has rebooted (which may take several minutes), force-restart your iPad:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
