imessage switching to SMS while on the move/travel, failed sending too?

Just got a new 15 up from 13. I've always been able to message people without issue but imessage is now switching from imessage to SMS only while on the move. Getting failed sends occasionally and then swaps to SMS until other person messages me, then swaps back to imessage. On recipient all messages are showing as imessage. I'm a bit OCD with my tech so it's driving me crazy. Help!

Sorry, this wasn't helpful at all.

Did a little troubleshooting and believe I've figured out the issue. Turns out it's only on one user. I learned they just got a new Macbook Air... they setup an icloud email but didn't include their phone number in the list to be used as iMessage address/ph number. They need to add their phone number to that list. Was previously sending to ph number and the icloud email was new so phone didn't know where to send the iMessage and was trying the ph number still. Removed the icloud email from the contact card and started a new contact card for that user with just their icloud email and determined that is what has happened.

Thanks.

iMessage (Blue) -

  • iPhone to iPhone: requires internet (Either over WiFi or Cellular Service) as it is sent over internet protocol. Needs Activation on your device.
  • iPhone to Android: Not available

SMS/MMS (Green) -

  • iPhone to Android: does not require any internet it is sent over cellular voice protocol. Needs to be enabled by your Carrier for the SIM used by you.
  • iPhone to iPhone: When iMessage is not activated or the device is not connected to the internet either over cellular or WiFi
  • You need to have an SMS/MMS plan enabled by your carrier for the SIM/eSIM that you use on your device. Apple Inc does not provide SMS/MMS services.

It will turn from Blue to Green if you have enabled "Send as SMS" and whenever your iPhone is not connected to the internet it is sent as SMS (green) to all iPhone users.
