I need macOS 12.0 or later to update Microsoft Office. I currently have Big Sur with 11.7.10. When I go to "Software Update" it takes me to the Apple Store. I see it says that Sonoma is compatible with MacBook Air from 2018 or later, and my Mac is from 2014. So this means I need to buy a new laptop? Thanks

You might still be able to obtain an old, unsupported build of Word that will run on Big Sur, but

Your Early 2014 MacBook Air cannot run Monterey or later. So yes, if you need or want to run Microsoft Word – and it has to be a supported version of Word – you will need to buy a new computer.

I assume you already have Office installed and you are (1) being prompted to update it or (2) have to update/upgrade to access some new feature. If it is (1) you can ignore the prompt to update Office and keep using it. My wife did that for well over a year because she was too busy to deal with upgrading to a new computer. (Unlike me, she doesn’t trust tech and expects disasters to occur with every change.)
