Issue charging iPad Air with a power bank through USB hub

Hi,

I'm having issues charging my iPad Air (5th gen) through my Kingston Nucleum USB hub using a Belkin 20000 mAh power bank. I'm using the iPad as a field recording interface for a Zylia ZM-1 ambisonics microphone, hence the need for connecting a power bank alongside the Zylia USB microphone for longer recording sessions.

My issue is that the iPad doesn't charge or even recognize the power connection while I connect the power bank through the charging port on the Nucleum hub. I can charge my MacBook Pro using this combination just fine as well as my phone, but my iPad refuses to recognize the power bank while using it this way. Using the power bank straight into the USB-C port of the iPad works fine though.

It does however work if I plug my original charger for the iPad into the Nucleum hub charge port and connect it to a wall outlet. I have also turned on Accessories under Allow Access When Locked in the iPad settings.

So is there something prohibiting my iPad from charging through a power bank in this manner or am I missing something?

Some details regarding my setup:

Power bank: Belkin BPB003 20000mAh 5V 3.0A max discharge

USB hub: Kingston Nucleum

iPad Air 5th gen 2022 M1

Zylia ZM-1 model 3E ambisonics microphone (tested charging through hub with and without the microphone plugged in)

Best regards

/Nils

I have verified that you should be able to charge your iPad Pro via your Nucleum hub from a suitable PowerBank.

For pass-through to work properly, ensure that your PowerBank supports USB PD (Power Delivery). While Belkin specifications state compatibility with iPhone (no mention of iPad), it makes no mention of USB PD.

Not all USB-C Power Adapters or PowerBanks support USB PD. USB Type-A ports (as used by your PowerBank) do not support USB PD.

Without support for USB PD, a 5V PowerBank capable of 2.4A (i.e, 12W or greater) can charge your iPad when connected directly to the iPad - but will not be able to support USB-C pass-through charging via a connected hub.

Also note that the connected source of pass-through power must also power the hub itself (typically ~10W) in addition to providing sufficient power to charge the iPad (=>12W). As such, the power source must be rated to supply ~25W or more.
