All Voicemails Missing after iOS 17.4 update

After iCloud backup was done on my iPhone12 pro at 7:40am on 3/13/24 I proceeded to update to iOS17.4 at around 8:00pm. It took give or take 20min for update to be completed. I was met with the hello screen when update was done. The following day 3/14/24 I went to listen to my saved voicemail from my grandmother who has passed and realized that I had no voicemails on my phone.( not in voicemails nor in deleted) I panicked and called my carrier who told me they can help me retrieve deleted voicemails but had no control over why voicemails on my phone prior to the update where not able to carry over once the update was done. I then called apple and spent 3hours on the phone. At first my advisor told me that it was a carrier issue and he couldn’t help unless I let apple download some sort of logging tracker that would send engineers information. I was hesitant and he was insensitive and told me there was nothing he could do without me willingly allowing this download to my device and hung up. After 5min I called again in desperation and got a new senior advisor who allowed me to grieve over my missing voicemails and calmly explained what the download would do and how it would help the engineers track the possible problem. I did it. I also explained how I have read on the community discussions how people have restored their phones and it worked. I have a 2TB storage plan, I have all iCloud preferences turned on and we were able to see the backup I had done prior to update on my device. Here I am next day, I have restored my device and oddly enough had 2 random voicemails show up on my device from 2/15/24 and in “ recently deleted” had 6 voicemails show as well. Proper settings is imperative to my plea of “ I have done everything right “ when it comes to making sure I am never faced with compromising/losing important data in my phone. It is a voicemail I need to get back especially because I have done nothing to lose it. I listened to this voicemail for the past 2 years on my device. It has been 2 days and I do not want more days to pass as I don’t want “time in between” to be the next excuse used. Please anyone in here if you were able to retrieve your voicemails after updating your phone to iOS 17.4 I am begging from the bottom of my heart to tell me what you did in hopes to getting the voicemails from my grandmother back. Thank you

iPhone 6, iOS 10

Lawrence thank you so much for responding. I too am trying to understand how this could happen and what might be in common. My provider is ATT but regardless my entire family shares my plan and they all have their voicemails and have not yet updated. I don’t mind to lose everything on my phone as I am backed up in multiple ways minus my voicemails. I have not slept in 3 days I am totally heartbroken and still awaiting on an update from the engineer team to my account supervisor. I appreciate you sending me the troubleshooting I have tried it all, even my backup from prior to the update will not restore any of it. I’m hoping for some good news. Will keep updating. 💔

@girlwithglasses, Your case is interesting, because I’ve been following the many threads on this subject, everyone who reported the problem with missing voicemails on their phone could still access their voicemails on their carrier’s server by calling directly into the server. Your’s is the first I have seen that said they are not on your carrier’s server.

This is exactly what I am experiencing and have done everything under the sun to troubleshoot. I also have vm counts not aligning because I had far more vm than the carrier system says I have.

WHICH type of reset did you do?

I have done a network reset, and a soft reset. The carrier also wanted me to do another type of reset but I declined so far - I can’t remember if it would have erased anything but declined for some reason.

which type of reset did you do?

is this a reset AND a reinstall or you’re saying the reset/reinstall are the same thing?

it sounds a little like the reset didn’t actually work but maybe updating to 17.4.1 did?

by the way, I ALSO have a poor battery but the phone carrier keeps telling me I need a new phone. And so does apple. Lol.

my battery health is 74%.

I also have quite full storage.

I ALSO called the phone carrier for a different issue (intense dropped signal) when they told me that nothing was wrong with their towers in the area but that all of my phones (XR, X, and 6s) need a new SIM card, which they sent but I have not yet installed.

I am still not sure whose end the issue is on or where these voicemails actually live, but it sounds from your report that it is on apples side (although seems you also had a sim issue?)

it seems these vm live somewhere with apple because my carrier voicemail seems to indicate they will delete them after 30 days whether you’ve saved them or not- you have to go back in and re-save them for another 30 days each time. When calling in.

now everyone has posted that the 17.4.1 update restored vm so I think I will try that.

I hadn’t done the 17.4 update and wasn’t missing any voicemails. This past Monday I did the 17.4.1 and lost some of my saved voicemails, some of which were from my Dad that had passed away.

Voicemails that I had previously and intentionally deleted with dates older than some that have disappeared can still be accessed in voicemails recently deleted.

Does this make any sense??

Has anyone else had this happen after the 17.4.1 update?
