Repeatedly failing to install MacOS from bootable USB installer to external flash drive
I have a 2021 MacBook Pro running Sonoma MacOS. I want to run Ventura or Monterey on an external drive so that I can test some software.
I have followed this guide Create a bootable installer – Apple Support (UK) but have not been able to get Ventura or Monterey to install successfully. I let it run for many hours during which it hung on "28 minutes remaining" for several hours, then restarted many, many times. Then it went into recovery mode saying it needed to reinstall which looked like it was doing well but then hung on "one minute remaining" again for many hours. When I revisited it in the morning it said the installation would not run and needed to be reinstalled.
I am using x2 SanDisk 128GB flash drives. The first (for the bootable installer) formatted to MacOS Extended (journaled) and the second (on which to install the OS) formatted to APFS with GUID partition map scheme.
I downloaded both the Ventura and Monterey OS installers from the app store.
I have included the first sections of the installation log and error log from my most recent Monterey installation attempt which I ultimately aborted after a couple of hours. Do they give any clues to what might be causing the issue?
