How to access Time Machine backups on Mac after reinstalling OS?

I have reinstalled Mac OS and created a new user account. I cannot access Time Machine Backups under the old user account because I don't have permission. It was my account. I have the passwords, but the account no longer exists on my Mac. How do I access my old backed up files?

How are you trying to access the backup? If you are not trying by “Browse Other Backup Disks” from the Time Machine status menu, give that a try. You must hold down the Option key when selecting the menu.
